After weeks of illness, we are back with the start of a new series.  Today we were due to take another journey into ExtinctAttractionLand, Unfortunately, we can’t. The attractions we were look at are not there anymore.  The good news, they have been returned to Disneyland Park instead. Let’s meet at Sleeping Beauty Castle to begin our tour.

I hear you. Sleeping Beauty Castle has never left Disneyland.  It’s been there since 1955, when the draw bridge was lowered and park guests entered into Fantasyland for the very first time.

However, on April 29, 1957, the Castle became an attraction inside an attraction when the Sleeping Beauty Walk Through opened its doors to the public on the backside, that is, the Fanstasyland side of the castle.  Guests climbed narrow circular staircases to walk past ten different dioramas depicting scenes from the still upcoming release of the 1959 animated classic.

The attraction, missed by many park guests because it was hidden away, closed its doors to the public on October 7, 2001.  Various reasons were given for the closure, from security concerns (this was a month after the terrorists attack, fears were high), to ADA concerns.  The primary reason for the closure though was for a refurbishment.  However, many of the displays were found to be in such disrepair Disney decided to would be easier and more economical to shutter the attraction instead.

This would not be a permanent, however.  In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Sleeping Beauty, a Special Edition DVD was released in the fall of 2008.  One of the special features was a virtual recreation of the Sleeping Beauty Walk Through Attraction.  During the creation of this feature, Disney Imagineers made the decision to recreate the walk through experience inside Sleeping Beauty Castle, and the attraction opened its doors to the public again on November 28, 2008.

Two other attractions have been removed from ExtinctAttractionLand and placed back into Disneyland Park, although both are at the center of swirling rumors currently.  We’ll look at those on our next entries. I thank you for taking the time to read this today.
