Hello, and welcome back to my thoughts and musings. As we enter into October, it’s time to celebrate some milestones.  To begin, I want to recognize a Disney Legend celebrating a birthday on October 1, Julie Andrews.

Born Julia Elizabeth Wells on October 1, 1935, Julie Andrews is best known in the Disney Universe for her title role in 1964’s Mary Poppins, for which she won the 1965 Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.  Incidentally, it’s been reported that Andrew’s initially turned down this role for health reasons, and Walt insisted they would hold off production until after her pregnancy.

This was not her only role with Disney.  Instead, she has had a fairly steady working relationship with the company.  In 1971 she appeared in the televised Grand Opening of Walt Disney World, which aired nearly a month after the park opened.

From the success of Mary Poppins, the Walt Disney Company named Julie Andrews a Disney Legends in 1991. She would also appear in the 2001 film The Princess Diaries and the 2004 sequel.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Disneyland in 2005, Julie Andrews was named Ambassador of The Happiest Homecoming on Earth.  In a move bringing her Disney career full circle, Andrews was able to select her favorite horse from King Arthur’s Carousel, which was then given the royal treatment for the Golden Anniversary.  She selected Jingles, who was then given a golden coat of paint and doled out in jewels.  Following the anniversary celebration, Jingles was then decorated to match the carousel horse she rode in Mary Poppins.

Also as a part of the 50th anniversary, Julie Andrews narrated the firework show “Remember…Dreams Come True” celebrating the park’s history.  She also narrated the 2008 movie Enchanted.

Of course, Julie Andrews has had a remarkable career outside of the Disney Universe as well, and is respected in all circles.  Happy Birthday to one of Hollywood’s brightest stars.
