Hello, and welcome back to my thoughts and musings. Recently, I wrote a brief introduction to recipient of the 2013 Disney Legend award. This award is given to members of the Walt Disney Company who have made an impact to the Disney company with their skill set. Today, at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, the awards will be handed out.
In addition to this honor, Disney does have another honor it bestows upon some of its employees, and I would like to look at that a little more closely at this time. I’m speaking of the Main Street USA Windows.
If I could make a rough sports comparison, the Disney Legend award would be the same as being put into a sports Hall of Fame. A Main Street USA Window, for the most part, would be the same as having an athlete’s number retired by a particular team. This is because most Main Street Windows on Disneyland are dedicated to park employees who have made an impact to the park in some way.
It’s important to note the phrase “for the most part.” Some windows are dedicated to people who made a direct impact to Walt’s life. For example, Elias Disney, Walt’s father, passed away before Disneyland was built yet Walt made sure a window was dedicated to him.
In all, nearly 100 windows have been dedicated on Main Street USA, including Chuck Boyajian, the first Manager of Custodial operations in Disneyland, hired in 1955 for the park opening. He is now the proprietor of “The Royal Care Co.”, slogan We Keep Your Castle Shining. Boyajian is credited for teaching his team the cleanliness standards Disneyland is so well known for. Bob Penfield is also honored. Bob was a Cast Member from opening day until mid-1997.
Although most windows are located on Main Street USA, there are others located throughout the park. Fess Parker (again, not a Cast Member, but the actor who protrayed Davy Crockett) is honored with a window in Frontierland, while Walt Disney himself has a window in Mickey’s Toon Town.
To bring our look at the Main Street USA Windows full circle, let’s return to the D23 Expo happening this weekend. As I previously mentioned, today the Disney Legends are being honored in the D23 Arena. On Friday, during his Disneyland Undiscovered presentation, 2013 Disney Legend inductee Tony Baxter was interrupted by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Tom Staggs. During this interruption, Staggs announced Tony Baxter will be receiving his Main Street USA Window, likely in spring of 2014.
I want to say congratulations to Tony, for a well deserved honor. Not mentioned previously, Tony had spent over 40 years working for Disney Parks, he was hired as an ice cream scooper on Main Street out of high school.
