Hello, and thanks for taking the time to read my thoughts and ideas.  Recently, I wrote about the Disney Legends, and was excited to note there is a special coming to Disney XD on August 1, at 8:30 pm.  Sadly, the show is only slotted for 15 minutes.  As this is not nearly enough time to introduce the public to 8 Disney Legends, I am spending this week taking a closer look at those being honored.  Yesterday I introduced Tony Baxter, Collin Campbell and Dick Clark.  Today and tomorrow we will look at the remaining five Legends in alphabetical order.

Again, I will be using D23 source information and the offering my own opinions as to why this individuals are Disney Legends.

Billy Crystal

From the D23 website: Billy Crystal is an acclaimed actor who lends his voice to Mike Wazowski, the frenetic, green cyclopean monster from Monsters Inc. and Monsters University. Best known for his memorable roles in When Harry Met Sally…, The Princess Bride, and City Slickers, Billy, who has won six Emmy Awards® and one Tony Award®, has also been a fixture on ABC television, where he hosted the Academy Awards® broadcast nine times and found his breakthrough role as Jodie Dallas on Soap from 1977-81.

It makes sense that Crystal would be honored as a Disney Legend the same year Monsters University debuted in theaters, but its not just for being a monster that makes him a Legend.  As his Disney biography stated, he has hosted the Oscars nine time, all on the ABC Network, which Disney owns.  It is his overall body of work that makes Crystal a Disney Legend of 2013.

John Goodman

Again, from the D23 site: John Goodman is a celebrated actor of stage and screen, and the voice behind James P. Sullivan, better known as “Sulley,” from Monsters Inc. and Monsters University. Among John’s notable film appearances are The Big LebowskiThe Flintstones, and most recently Argo and Flight. John’s appearances in Disney-produced films include the Hollywood Pictures films Arachnophobia and Born Yesterday, as well as Touchstone Pictures’ StellaCoyote UglyO Brother, Where Art Thou, and Confessions of a Shopaholic.

Just like his monstrous co-star, Goodman is being honored for the complete body of his acting career instead of just his Sullivan character.  As noted in his Disney biography he has been in several successful Disney company films, along with his role in Rosanne on the ABC network.  It’s fitting he is honored as a Disney Legend at the same time as Crystal and the release of Monsters University.

As a spoiler alert: tomorrow when we look at the remaining Disney Legends of 2013, there will again be no women listed.  It is unfortunate and confusing as to why the selection committee omitted women from this year’s class of Disney Legends.  There are many woman, past and present that are worthy to be named Disney Legends that have yet to receive the honor.  Here’s hoping this is corrected in the next class of Disney Legends.

We will look at the remaining three Disney Legends tomorrow.  I thank you for taking the time to read this today.
