Hello and welcome back to my thoughts and musings and pleas to bring back some of the classic Disney programs of old. I am pleased to announce that Disney is taking a step in that direction. I’ll explain along the way.
In 1987, the Walt Disney Company created a program to honor those who had made an impact on Disney during their careers, whether through acting, animating, theme park design, or writing. This honor is the Disney Legend award, given yearly in a special ceremony.
Disney Legends, or their estates, receive a bronze plaque and a hand crafted bronze statue, as seen above. Each living Legend has his or her hand prints and signature placed on the plaque, which is on display in the Disney Legends Plaza at the Disney Studios in Burbank, California.
According to the official Disney Legends website: “The Disney Legends award has three distinct elements that characterize the contributions made by each talented recipient.
The Spiral … stands for imagination, the power of an idea.
The Hand … holds the gifts of skill, discipline and craftsmanship.
The Wand and the Star … represent magic: the spark that is ignited when imagination and skill combine to create a new dream.”
The 2013 recipients will receive their awards on Saturday, August 10 during the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California.
So what does this have to do with The Disney Channel? To fully understand, let’s first meet the Disney Legend recipients for 2013. There are eight recipients this year, in alphabetical order:
At this point, I can hear you saying to yourself, I know some of these names, but why are they Disney Legends? Or you’re saying who are these people? I could go into a huge detailed biography of each recipient, find and post pictures of them, and tell you why I think they are a worthy recipient.
I could let Disney do it for me.
That’s right. This year, as part of preparing for the D23 Expo, Disney is producing a special, Meet the Disney Legends. Hosted by Brandon Johnson, from the television show My Yard Goes Disney, this special will premiere on Thursday, August 1, at 8:30 pm (EST&PST). Look for it on Disney XD.
That’s right. Disney XD. It does exist, look for it in your local program guides. Set your DVRs. In my mind, Disney XD is not quite the right place for this show. But looking at the other Disney-owned channels in their stable, none of them are. It’s my hope Meet the Legends will be a throwback to the Backstage Disney specials that used to are on The Disney Channel. So it being on any Disney-owned channel is a victory.
If you agree with me that this program is worth watching, and worth being produced by Disney, please let them know. Let Disney know by WATCHING it. August 1, 8 pm Disney XD. Speak to Disney with ratings. If they find out the public wants these type of shows, they will make more. Please, stand with me and help send a message loud and clear we want more of these specials.
