Today is July 17.  What oh what am I going to write about today?  Yes, I think I shall.  Lets look at the 58th anniversary of the dedication of Disneyland in Anaheim, California.

Just one year and a day after Walt Disney announced to a national television audience, Walt Disney presented his park to a list of invited friends, dignitaries, and gate crashers (the third group seldom gets noticed).

Yes, 58 years ago today, July 17, 1955 Walt Disney unveiled Disneyland to his invited friends, and also to the ABC Television Audience.  In front of one of the 29 cameras set up in the park, Walt proudly stood and stated his famous words “To all who come to this happy place, welcome!”

And then the parade began, and Walt had to sprint to his ride.

July 17 is now celebrated as the anniversary of the Disneyland opening.  There is just one problem.

Disneyland’s official grand opening was on Monday, July 18, 1955.  After the celebrities left, after the cameras were turned off, after the asphalt on Main Street USA finally set, the general public was welcomed into the park on Monday morning.

All right, its a technicality.  But seeing how happy these two are, who am I to argue with Disney-created history.happywalt

And speaking of not messing with Disney created history…one more comment before I go. Consider this image of the Golden Horseshoe Review, as seen on the Dateline Disneyland broadcast of July 17, 1955

Yes.  That is a Pepsi sign hanging on the front of the building.  Something tells me, looking at the history of Disneyland, that a Main Street USA themed Starbucks will not be the end of the world.

Happy anniversary,  Disneyland.
