In Line for a View

Hello, and thanks for stopping by! Today I want to focus on one of the shortest-lived, and long forgotten attractions at Disneyland, the Viewliner.

On June 26, 1957, the Viewliner train began operating on two tracks inside Disneyland.  The lines were known as “the fastest miniature train in the world” and had single-circuit stations in Fantasyland and in Tomorrowland.  Each circuit had one train running, blue in Fantasyland and red in Tomorrowland.

The Viewliner, a B-Ticket attraction, was the fourth railroad ride in Disneyland, following the Santa Fe & Disneyland Railroad looping around the park, Casey Jr. Circus Train in Fantasyland, and the Mine Train in Frointerland.

Running on Oldsmobile V8 gasoline engines, the Viewliner ran until September 15, 1958.  During its run, nearly 1.5 million guest rode inside the blue Alice, Bambi, Cinderella, Pinocchio and Tinker Bell or red Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn and Venus blue cars. The Viewliner was closed to make room for new attractions, including the Matterhorn, Submarine Voyage and the Monorail, whose loading area is where the Tomorrowland Viewliner once stood.

I want to give special thanks to Paul F. Anderson and the Disney History Institute for allowing me to use these wonderful photos today.  For more information about the Disney History Institute click on the link above, and they can also be found on Facebook.
